August Preschool Activities
We go back to school at the beginning of August and since we are still in summer it is the perfect time to combine summer and back to school activities in preschool.
Fine Motor Activities
Summer Hole Punch Activity
Do your students LOVE using a hole punch? Mine do! I love changing up this activity with fun and colorful seasonal images. This month it is ice cream cones, popsicles, and sand castles. You can grab this activity in my TPT store.
Mermaid Color Matching Clip Cards
These adorable mermaid color matching clip cards are so fun for August. Print, laminate, cut out the cards, and add clothespins. Great for eye hand coordination and working on fine motor skills. Download here!
Sponge Squeezing
This is an easy setup and your students will love it. Grab two wide bowls, fill one with water, and demonstrate how to transfer the water from bowl to bowl.
Name Activities
We do a lot of name activities in preschool. Here are the two I do with my students in August.
First Initial Sticker Activity
The beginning of the school year is a great time to introduce the capital letters of your students’ first names. Print these large letters on colored construction paper and decorate. We used these stickers, but your students can color, paint, use dot markers, or make collages with them. Lots of possibilities! Download the file here!
Back to School Name Activity
Help your students with name recognition with this easy to edit and prep crayon name activity! I love to print them on colorful construction paper or card stock, but they look great printed on white construction paper, and then your students can color. Check out this blog post to see how to edit the crayons.
August Preposition Activity
How cute is this cat and box hands on prepostion activity?! It is purrfect for practicing position words with your students. My students love to do this activity over and over. Available here in my TPT store.
August Poems
We work on a new poem each week and Jack Be Nimble is the first one, followed by Humpty Dumpty, then Little Miss Muffet. By the end of the year, we have memorized so many poems! Orange is a Carrot is another poem we work on at the beginning of the year and when the students are finished they have a book to bring home.
Jack Be Nimble
Jack Be Nimble is a favorite with my students. They love to jump over the candle and say the poem. This is a simple and easy craft to make with your students. If you are looking for a template that is easy to use, I have one in my TPT store.
Orange is a Carrot Poem
This is one of my favorite activities to do with my students during the first month of school. Not only are we memorizing a fun poem and working on our colors, but each of the activities teaches a new skill. We are painting, gluing, tearing, folding, using stickers, pin poking and cutting. Check out this blog post for how to make this fun book! You can find the templates for each of the pages in my TPT store.
August Art Skills
When prepping art activities at the beginning of the year I introduce one new skill at a time. Scissors, glue sticks, glue bottles, tempera paint, watercolors, etc.. For example, the Jack Be Nimble craft is perfect for introducing glue sticks.
Circle Gluing Craft
Practice gluing with a glue bottle using circles to make a colorful collage. Use a circle paper hole punch to make the circles!
Back to School Scissor Activity
Download this fun and easy pencil scissor activity for your students to practice cutting. Print on yellow construction paper and then cut them out. Your students can then practice cutting on the lines. Download here!
Color Mixing – Finger Painting
August or the start of the school year is a perfect time to introduce color mixing. This is always a big hit with my students and they learn how to wash their own hands quickly!
