Christmas Preschool Read Alouds
Are you looking for a few new Christmas read-alouds for your preschool library?
We have been reading The Gingerbread Boy on repeat. The kids are talking about it and retelling the story of how the fox tricked the gingerbread boy. This classic does not have a Christmas theme in the illustrations, but we read it every December and make fun gingerbread crafts.
The Little Reindeer is a perfect Christmas read-aloud. Ollie is dreaming of Christmas when she hears the sound of jingle bells. When she gets out of bed to investigate she is taken on a magical journey. The text is short and the illustrations are stunning, mostly black and white with subtle colors.
Merry Christmas, Gus is just a fun Christmas read-aloud. Gus does not like anything Christmas, not the sweaters, the caroling, or the snow. But Gus then realized that Christmas is doing things with those you love. Simple text and the illustrations are colorful and bold. A definite favorite at storytime!
So many preschoolers love trains and a book about a boy who chooses a tree who loves trains is a perfect fit. The Christmas Tree Who Loved Trains is a story of a tree that just wants to hear and feel the train zooming past. When the tree is transported to the boy’s house at Christmas time he misses being outside and the silence of the trains whistles. When Santa brings a toy train on Christmas Eve, the tree has never been happier. The story has a happy ending as the family replants the tree right next to the train track again.
The Broken Ornament is a story about Jack who just wanted the best Christmas ever. He wanted a bigger tree and more decorations so Santa would see his house first. In his eagerness to add more to the tree, he did not listen to his mom and drops a sentimental ornament. Jack is then visited by Tinsel who grants his wish of having the best Christmas ever. A magical Christmas adventure begins, but in the end, Jack asks for the ornament to be fixed and Tinsel explains why it was sentimental to his mom. The ending is heartwarming. The text is a little long for a read-aloud but is perfect if your students are a bit older.
Red and Lulu are two birds living in the safe branches of their perfect tree when just as the weather was getting cold their tree is chopped down. One day Red was out looking for food and the two birds are separated. Red tells Lulu to stay in the tree and that he would find her. Red follows the tree to a strange place unlike any he has seen before and sees the Christmas landscape of New York City. Heartwarming and simple text and the illustrations are a beautiful representation of the city at Christmas.
All of the Bug Books are favorites during story time! Jingle Bugs is a fun, interactive, rhyming classic!
