First Week of School
The first week of school there are so many basic skills our students will be learning. How to sit and particpate for circle and storytime, how to get along and share with our new friends, how to wash our hands at school, and how to use a glue stick, are just a few of the many skills we will focused on. Plus we will be starting our poem of the week, learning a new sound/letter and shape, and mixing colors. And this is just the tip of the iceberg!
Name Activity – First Initials
This sticker activity will be a hit in the first week of school! It is easy to prep, a great fine motor activity, and it will help your students with letter recognition. You can grab the free printables here, and we love these stickers!
Shape – Circle
There are so many fun art activities to make with circles! Probably the easiest one to prep is to make circle paint prints using small baby food bottles. Or even smaller circles with the lids from tubes of toothpaste or chapstick. Another favorite is a circle collage with bright colored contruciton paper cut into different sized circles, easy prep, and they turn out so fun!
Poem – Jack Be Nimble
Our first poem is Jack Be Nimble. We have a small battery operated candle that we practice jumping over while we recite the poem. We also make this craft to add to our poetry book.
Letter – A for Apple
The first letter of the alphabet we will be working on is the letter A. Our craft this week will be ‘Aa is for apple.’ This is from my Letter A Alphabet Activities resource. From this resource, we will also be using the formation posters and the beginning sounds poster. Since it is the first week, we will not be using any of the printables until later in the month.
Playdough – Ocean Themed
For the first few weeks, our theme in the classroom will be Ocean Animals. I made blue playdough and added a little bit of glitter. Have you made playdough using your mixer with the dough hook? I will never go back! In the playdough tray, add ocean animals, small blue and green gems, and ocean-themed cookie cutters.
Concept – Go -Together

During group time we will be doing a few go-togethers using this resource and pocket charts. This is an engaging activity which will encourge social interaction, vocabulary, and categorization skills.
Art – Color Mixing

We jump right in to mixing primary colors the first week of school. Fingerpainting and using colored water and eye droppers or pipettes are a couple of fun activites.
Books – Just a few…..
Starting off the school year with the Pete the Cat books is a no-brainer. I Love My White Shoes is a favorite! The kids love the stories and are always enaged! Beware though, you will be reading them on repeat until you just can’t anymore and will need to put them away!
There is just something about Dog’s Colorful Day that has the kids mesmorized! It is a great first week of school read aloud, there are colors, numbers, and at the end ask your students to remember how the dog got each one of his spots.
Since our theme is Ocean the first two weeks of school we have a bunch of ocean themed books. One of my favorites is I’m the Biggest Thing in the Ocean. The illustrations are big, there is a variety of ocean animals, and the ending is fun
Science Friday – Walking Water

Our sceince experiment this week is “walking water” and it is a magical one! Here is more info on the set up.
