Summer Preschool Read Alouds
Summertime in preschool is the perfect time to settle in and spend some time reading! These summer read-alouds are some of our favorites!
Jabari Jumps is one of our classroom favorites. I tend to read it at the beginning of the year and again at the end of the school year. The kids are glued to the book as Jabari faces his fear of jumping off the high dive.
Have you ever swallowed a watermelon seed? The Watermelon Seed follows the alligator as he goes through all the crazy thoughts of a watermelon growing inside his stomach. This easy text and the simple illustrations are a perfect summertime story read.
Goldfish On Vacation is a newer favorite for us. When a local man fixes the neighborhood water fountain he announces that it will be a summer home for all goldfish. Just a fun story!
I had to include Summer Color! in this list. The illustrations and rhyming text just scream summer! Yellow sunflowers, red ice pops, green treetops, purple blankets, etc…
Overcoming the fear of swimming can be hard for some kids. Saturday Is Swimming Day is a wonderful story of how patience and a little bit of bravery are all you need to face your fears.
Carl books are forever in our library! They are visually beautiful and the stories are easy to visually follow! Carl’s Summer Vacation takes place at the family’s summer home on the lake. Carl is in charge of giving Madeleine a nap so they can be ready for the night’s fireworks. Of course, they do all the fun summer activities!
During the school year, we have read the three other seasonal books by Kevin Henkes. The simple text and the painted illustrations in Summer Song are perfect for storytime! I love how all of these books come together.
The Relatives Came is a classic! I love the way the book highlights all of the memories we have when relatives visit. The relatives get up before the sun and drive all day. When they arrive they hug and eat and everyone sleeps in different beds. Their time is spent just being together having slow easy summer days.
Dude! is a new addition to our library. I could not resist the cover. We love a one-word book and this one is perfect. The kids can read it themselves! Two beavers are just hanging out on the beach collecting whatever they can find, until one day they find a surfboard.
