Beach Preschool Read-Alouds
The Little Blue Cottage is one of my new favorites and is bound to be a classic in beach homes! The sweet cottage waits all year long for the little girl to come and visit in the summer. I love how this story is told from the house’s perspective. The amazing seasonal drawings of the house and as the little girl gets older make this a book I will want on my shelf throughout the year.
Jules is getting pushed around by the ocean in Jules vs. the Ocean while she is trying to make a sand castle. She soon decides she will stand her ground, but then the ocean takes her bucket out with the tide. With no hope to build a castle now she gives up, but her sister says who needs a bucket? They work together to build a fun castle. Simple text and sweet illustrations make this a heartwarming read-aloud.
Day At the Beach is a story about Gideon and his little sister and a ‘perfect’ sand castle. It is not an easy task to build a perfect castle as Gideon finds out, but he manages to be King of the Castle, only to learn it is a lonely place. He then sees his little sister and his parents having a fun time building together. A great read-aloud with fun illustrations.
The Sandcastle That Lola Built is a great read-aloud. As Lola is building her sandcastle she has unexpected help and finds unexpected treasures to add. A fun day at the beach until the inevitable happens — a big wave! This book will open up some fun discussions with your class.
Pig Kahuna is just fun! Fergus and Dink are perfectly happy staying on land and collecting fun sea objects until one day they spot a surfboard. They have a lot of fun with it in the sand until Dink thinks it misses the sea and sets it free. Fergus saves the surfboard and then unintentionally learns to surf!
Wave is one of those wonderful wordless books. The story is of a relationship between a girl and the ocean waves. It is beautifully and simply illustrated. A perfect beach book!
